Today was Hay's 16th birthday and to celebrate we surprised him at the orphanage in the morning with an embarassing blue party hat!! :-)) The children got themselves into groups and made birthday cards for him.
As a special birthday treat, today was also Pancake Day!! We bought 2 camp-stoves in the market ($10.50 each...), as well as the frying-pans and pancake mix. Steph taught the English words the kids had to learn to make the pancakes, I cut-up the bananas, Aviv made the mix, Mich taught the kids how to flip - and Ryan was taking photos... The pancakes were topped with bananas, honey and chocolate - needless to say, all 100+ pancakes were gone...
We came back to Siem Reap and went to visit Lidia who runs an orphanage/shelter called Together for Cambodia. We spent some time there talking with some of the kids and having a look around. After visiting Lidia we made our way to see Susan who runs Honour Village Cambodia, a school and orphanage out of Siem Reap. Both these ladies are absolutely inspirational!! You can google their organizations...
We didn't have much time to teach at the school this afternoon so we went to the orphanage for about an hour and just "hung out" with the kids before they had dinner.
First we learned the English words we needed.. Pancake mix, water, frying-pan......
Alex and the kids cutting-up the bananas for our pancakes...
Mich teaching a 'making pancakes 101' class...
And the students are ready to take over... :-)
Hay was very moved by our class birthday party for him -
couldn't stop cupping his hands in appreciation...
And cue the silly-string!!!!! :-))))
The kids tucking into their pancakes...
And of course there's plenty for seconds, and thirds..... :-)
Another big day is planned for tomorrow... We are going to try and get as much sleep as possible tonight as tomorrow we will be having very little sleep - up at 2.00am Saturday morning to venture off for Sihanoukville... Via Phnom Penh...
Nice to see Michelle cooking - she is the expert of the family. Looks amazing. Wish Hay a happy birthday and hope the bus trip wasn't too bad.
